Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger said that " Halo is the only video game that ever inspired us to write a whole suite. Incubus was tapped to produce a suite of music which appears scattered throughout the soundtrack as four movements. The bands featured in Volume 1, including Breaking Benjamin and Incubus, were enthusiastic about adding music to the soundtrack. As the soundtrack was finished before all the in-game music was completed, none of the tracks written by O'Donnell appear in Halo 2 in the same arrangement. The first volume was released alongside the video game as Volume 1 on November 9 of the same year. The first volume would contain the game's themes that were finished and mixed as well as "inspired-by" offerings from other artists. In the summer of 2004, Halo 2 composer Martin O'Donnell and album producer Nile Rodgers decided it would be a good idea to present Halo 2 's music in two distinct volumes. Halo 's music has since been played in concert settings, including Play! A Video Game Symphony and Video Games Live. The soundtracks' success was pointed to as a sign of increasing legitimacy of video game music in the entertainment industry. Upon release both soundtracks became commercial successes, with more than 100,000 copies sold. Volume 2 was declared the "real" soundtrack to Halo 2. Critics were split on the merits of Volume 1, with some publications enjoying the bonus offerings while others felt the first volume lacked cohesion. Upon release, the music of Halo 2 was praised. To mark its release both Microsoft and Sumthing Else Music Works planned an aggressive marketing campaign. The music was recorded in pieces with a fifty-piece orchestra at Studio X in Seattle, Washington. The music was based on what was happening in the game, rather than using leitmotifs or theme repetitively. ![]() O'Donnell, who had previously composed the music for Bungie games such as Myth and Halo: Combat Evolved, sought to develop the " Halo sound" of the previous game as well as introduce new sounds and influences to the music. Volume 2 was released on Apand contains all the game music arranged in a suite form. Volume 1, released at the same time as Halo 2 on November 9, 2004, contains arranged instrumental pieces written by Martin O'Donnell and his partner Michael Salvatori, as well as "inspired-by" tracks from bands Incubus, Hoobastank and Breaking Benjamin. The soundtrack was released as two separate volumes, released almost two years apart. The Halo 2 Original Soundtrack is the soundtrack for Bungie's 2004 video game Halo 2.

And when Andre’s given another shot inside the ring, he’s grateful-and determined to make the most of his second chance.Īndre’s most questionable decision comes near the end of the game when he takes a dive and loses to an opponent. Though he spends five years in the clink for a crime he didn’t commit, the boxer doesn’t wallow in bitterness he moves on with his life and sets aside his own failed aspirations to help his brother (also a fighter). Through it all, Andre tries to make (mostly) the right decisions-albeit while staying true to the game’s incredibly violent ethos. Though gamers can zip through the Champion mode in just a few hours, the narrative packs a wallop. They get back up.” And we begin to see better days for the fighter-both ahead and, courtesy of some flashback fights, behind.įight Night Champion has earned raves from many game critics, in large part because of its gritty, harrowing storyline. As his manager tells him via foggy flashback, “That’s what champions do, Andre. For most would-be ring-kings, the one-two punch of jail time and a crushed fist would spell a certain KO. He wins his first fight in the big house (assuming you’re skilled enough to help him do it) but gets ambushed afterward and has his right hand broken. The first time we meet the boxer he’s in prison for an unspecified crime, taking on tattooed skinheads for jailhouse pride. ![]() In the game’s Champion mode, gamers step into the shoes of Andre Bishop, a talented fighter who falls afoul of a crooked promoter. ![]() For the first time in the Fight Night series, the game includes a storyline-and it sinks players into a corrupt, brutal underworld that (allegedly) lurks behind what we see on ESPN.Īs its rating attests, the results are decidedly mixed. You just can’t get that sort of narrative resonance out of, say, badminton.įight Night Champion, EA Sport’s newest ring contender-and its first M-rated release-tries to give gamers a taste of both the sport and the metaphor. The sport’s themes are so resonant and, in a way, so universal that more folks watch boxing movies than boxing matches. Hollywood, for its part, can’t get enough boxing, plumbing its gritty depths in everything from Requiem for a Heavyweight to Rocky to The Fighter. We talk about how we’re “on the ropes” or “down for the count.” We tell our kids how important it is to get back up when life knocks us down. Maybe that’s why, culturally, it’s become more than just another sport. Oh, sure, it has its rules and nuances, but in the end it’s really about two guys hitting each other ’til one is forced to stop. As a sport, boxing is pretty straightforward.
